IAJGS will be in DC in August <http://dc2001.org/>. I checked and saw your name listed for the NY conference but I didn't check any of the other years, so I didn't know if you were a regular. NY was my second conference and I've been every year since 2005. I'll be teaching blogging this year. :-)

What I meant about that marriage record is that it didn't look like the metrical records that I have seen. So either it was something different or the record taker in Nowogrod used a completely different format than the rest of Poland.

Thanks, Banai. There was a lot that was cut out, but I feel constrained by the "no disclosure" agreement. The records you are referring to are governmental, if I understand you correctly. I probably can't elaborate on this anymore, but let me know about the IAJSGS conference (I attended one as a speaker a couple of years ago).

Glenn, thank you for your comments! I'm so glad you found my blog.

And thank you for finding my mistake. I do know Symcho and Szymon are the same. I was trying to reiterate that that was the same couple from the marriage record, so I should have written a brother to Meyer at that point. I was just trying to get this entry posted and didn't pay enough attention to that while editing.

I know that a lot of research is done that we don't see in the episode, but I can only nitpick what we do see, so I had to question the various names and spelling changes. I would have assumed his name was somewhere as Tzvi Hersz, but it wasn't shown. I did mention finding Pelterowicz in JRI-Poland.

I also know that many genea-bloggers (and thus genea-readers) don't know about Jewish research so I tried to explain some of that a little too. But there are other details in the shows that are not explained that I don't know anything about (and are mentioned in other nitpicker blog posts), so throwing in an extra Yiddish word probably wouldn't have hurt. ;-)

After a previous episode, via BlogTalkRadio, we heard from one of the researchers who appeared on screen and learned more from behind the scenes. It was fascinating.

If you'd like to share any other details about the research, I'd be happy to know. For instance, what kind of marriage record was it that you found? Was I right about it being a synagogue record or was it in some special rabbinical documents? (I don't know about rabbinical research yet.) How much of the scene was filmed that didn't make the final cut of the episode? Did you have more documents and more details that you shared with Gwyneth at the time or was what we saw all of it?

And will you be attending the IAJGS conference in DC this summer? I'd be happy to make your acquaintance there.

Thanks for your careful attention. Just to clear up, the challenge for me as a historian was to try to use every document at my disposal; but the names vary from document to document. After I was confident that they referred to the same person, by cross-checking other details, I preferred Tzvi Hirsch, which did appear as a coupling in some documents. I agree Paltrowicz should have been rendered consistently on the family tree. I also preferred to translate as much possible, hence "memorial" instead of "yizkor". My feeling was that the audience was already being introduced to many foreign sounding names and terms. By the way (as long as we are nitpicking), you say "birth of Peltyel in 1864 son of Symcho Pelterowicz and Cypa Lewitanska, a brother to Szymon". Actually, Symcho and Szymon are the same person.

Thank you, Sarah. I now have a lovely blog times three. I've been busy and fallen behind blogging. I have a lot of rough drafts to work on, including accepting three of these now and passing it on.

Randy, thank you for your comments! It does take a few hours and a couple of viewings. And it's all from me. Sometimes I'll read some of what others have blogged about before I've finished mine, but I try not to repeat those unless it's something I already noticed.

I watch once for the entertainment value, and I notice some details for blogging later. My second viewing will have a lot of pausing for me to write the rough draft of the blog post. Then I get obsessive with the editing to be sure of the grammar, spelling, and tense, and I'll often go back to the video to double check details. Sometimes I'll see more things and watch more of the episode again. Most episodes I watch twice and then rewatch some parts to be sure I get the details correct. This one I ended up watching three times in its entirety because I kept seeing more.

For instance, when we saw the death record for Sarah Frances Stout, I hadn't noticed the name in the other columns (witnesses perhaps) or the Stout listed below her until I happened to pause right at the record while editing for the blog. I did notice all the name changes and variations in the charts in the Jewish section at the end, and paused to see the Polish spellings on the marriage document, but I didn't notice Ida's grandmother listed in the 1910 census until later when I looked at the details of the other three to figure out the "1890 census".

Because of the way I am, I'm going to nitpick the episodes while watching anyway. At least with this blog, I get to share what I've seen and move on; it's therapeutic to get it written down so I don't keep obsessing over it (much). I'm glad that you and others enjoy reading these!

Hi Banai,

You do a wonderful job on these. Not having done any Jewish research, or having any Eastern Europe ancestry at all, I was kind of lost during that portion of the show. You explained it very well.

How long does this post take you? I can see you, or someone, going over the video for hours on end to get the details you're listing.

Thanks -- Randy
